Shriram Life Insurance has declared a bonus of Rs 201 crore for the financial year 2023-24, marking a 35% increase from the Rs 149 crore bonus declared in the previous year. This bonus will benefit approximately 3.8 lakh policyholders who have various participating plans with the company.
The robust growth in premium income has been a key driver behind this bonus declaration. According to Casparus J H Kromhout, the Managing Director and CEO of Shriram Life Insurance, the surge in new business premium income during FY24 was the result of multiple factors. "Our surge in new business premium income in FY24 was led by a combination of factors which includes new partners, technology upgrades, and focused sales. We believe this growth must be shared with our customers, who are the fulcrum of our growth story," Kromhout stated.

As of March 31, 2024, Shriram Life Insurance sold around 4,46,730 policies, a remarkable increase from the 2,90,156 policies sold in the previous fiscal year. This growth reflects the company's expanding market reach and the successful implementation of its strategic initiatives. The company also reported settling 58,800 claims in FY24, maintaining a high claim settlement ratio of 98%.
Shriram Life Insurance has also shown significant growth in its Assets Under Management (AUM), which now stands at Rs 11,282 crore, a 25% increase from Rs 9,012 crore in the previous financial year. This increase in AUM highlights the company's effective asset management strategies and its ability to generate returns for its policyholders. The company recorded a Profit After Tax (PAT) of Rs 158 crore for FY24.
A notable aspect of Shriram Life Insurance's business strategy is its focus on the rural segment, which constitutes 41% of its total business. This emphasis on serving rural customers not only aligns with the company's mission to enhance financial inclusion but also drives its growth in untapped markets.
Shriram Life Insurance has consistently declared bonuses over the past few years, reflecting its stable growth and profitability. The bonuses declared in recent years are, March 2024: Rs 201 crore, March 2023: Rs 149 crore, March 2022: Rs 119 crore, March 2021: Rs 110 crore, and March 2020: Rs 94 crore
These bonuses represent the additional amounts declared on participating policies, which are essentially a share of the profits made by the insurer distributed among policyholders. These can come in various forms, such as reversionary bonuses, which are added to the policy's sum assured, and terminal bonuses, which are paid out at the end of the policy term or on the death of the policyholder.
The declared bonus of Rs 201 crore will provide significant benefits to the 3.8 lakh policyholders holding participating plans. This payout not only boosts the returns on their life insurance policies but also reinforces the trust and confidence policyholders have in Shriram Life Insurance.
With the increase in the declared bonus, the robust growth in premium income, and the continued focus on customer-centric strategies, Shriram Life Insurance is well-positioned for future growth. The company's ability to adapt to market changes, leverage new technologies, and expand its reach into rural areas will be crucial in maintaining its upward trajectory.
