Sikkim government employees and pensioners will receive a 2 percentage point increase in Dearness Allowance and Dearness Relief from 1 January 2026, Chief Minister (CM) Prem Singh Tamang has announced. The arrears arising from the revision will be paid before Dashain 2026, giving employees and retired staff a clear timeline for the pending payout.

The announcement was made during Independence Day celebrations at Paljor Stadium in Gangtok on 15 August. The decision matters for serving employees and pensioners because DA and DR are linked to basic pay and pension. According to the announcement, the state will raise Dearness Allowance for government employees by 2 percentage points. Pensioners will receive a similar 2 percentage point increase in Dearness Relief. Both revisions will apply retrospectively from 1 January 2026, which means beneficiaries will be entitled to arrears for the period between the effective date and actual payment.

Dearness Allowance is paid to government employees to offset the impact of inflation on salaries. Dearness Relief serves the same purpose for pensioners. These payments are calculated as a percentage of basic salary or basic pension, making them a recurring component of income rather than a one-time benefit.

For employees, a DA revision can also influence other pay-linked calculations, depending on service rules. Retirement benefits, provident fund contributions and certain allowances are often connected to basic salary structures. For pensioners, DR increases the monthly pension payout and helps protect fixed-income households from rising living costs.

Some have approved 2 percentage point increases, while others have taken larger steps to narrow gaps with central government rates. In some cases, governments have also cleared pending arrears, which can be a major fiscal outgo.
