Tamil Nadu Thai Maaman Gold Ring Scheme: Does Gold Rates In Chennai Impact 1-Gram Gold Ring Scheme?

The 1-gram gold ring scheme for newborn babies in Tamil Nadu is at full swing, with Kalyan Jewellers recently supplying up to 38,550 gold rings in 22-carat. However, do the gold rates in Chennai or other cities in Tamil Nadu impact the newly launched Thaimaaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam or Thai Maaman Gold Ring Scheme? On Tuesday, 24-carat, 22-carat, and 18-carat gold prices in Chennai dropped sharply.

What Is Tamil Nadu's Thai Maaman Gold Ring Scheme?

The chief minister of Tamil Nadu, CJ Vijay, launched Thaai Maaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam gold scheme with effect from September 28, 2026. The scheme is inspired by the Tamil culture of "Thaai Maman Seer."

The Thai Maman phrase refers to a mother's brother. In Tamil traditions, the maternal uncle of a mother welcomes her child with a gift, which can be in any form, including gold. Hence, this tradition is symbolic for the TVK government to welcome newborn babies in the government-backed hospitals. TVK here is the maternal uncle and every woman in the state is referred to as a sister.

Thai Maaman Gold Ring Scheme: Eligibility

The scheme was launched on September 28, but newborn babies born after June 22, 2026, will be eligible for the scheme. The main rule is that the newborn baby should be born in any Tamil Nadu government hospital or government primary health care.

The mother must be a permanent resident of the state and registered under the PICME (Pregnancy and Infant Cohort Monitoring and Evaluation). The mother should also have a Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) ID for eligibility.

However, babies born in private hospitals but were later admitted to government hospitals will not be eligible. Neither babies born in private hospitals will be eligible as well.

The 1-gram gold ring is of 22-carat and in the form of ring.

Thai Maaman Gold Ring Scheme: How To Apply?

There are no specific guidelines on how to apply for this scheme. For babies born after September 28, 2026, they will receive the gift in the hospital itself.

Once the newborn baby meets the above-mentioned eligibility criteria, the government's healthcare system will identify the baby and arrange for the 1-gram gold gift through the hospital.

The babies will receive their gold ring gifts before discharge. Take note, the rule is only applicable in government hospitals.

In case a baby is born after June 22nd and before September 28th, the government is carrying a campaign to distribute rings through designated distribution hubs.

Thai Maaman Gold Ring Scheme: Documents Required

During the distribution process, the parents of the newborn baby should be sure to have proof of identity that confirms she is a resident of Tamil Nadu. These documents can be e-KYC-verified: Aadhaar, PICME registration, and RCH ID. They will be verified before handing the gift to the beneficiary.

Does Gold Rates Rise Or Fall In Chennai Impact The Scheme?

On Tuesday, 24-carat gold rates dropped by Rs 1,600 in 100 grams to Rs 14,90,200 and plunged by Rs 160 to Rs 1,49,020 per 10 grams. The 1 gram gold price dipped by Rs 16 to Rs 14,902.

In case of 18-carat, 100 grams gold plunged by Rs 1,500 to Rs 11.22 lakh and 10 grams gold rate slipped by Rs 150 to Rs 1,12,200. However, the 1 gram gold rate dipped by Rs 15 to Rs 11,220.

But the changes in 24-carat and 18-carat will not necessarily impact 1-gram gold ring scheme since the gift is in 22-carat.

The 22-carat gold price tumbled by Rs 1,500 in 100 grams to Rs 13,66,000 and dropped by Rs 150 to Rs 1,36,600. The 1 gram gold is down by Rs 15 to Rs 13,660 .

In certain ways, the change in 22-carat gold rates in Chennai or other cities in the state will impact the scheme but not the beneficiary. Vijay's government has announced an outlay of Rs 755.83 crore per annum under the scheme.

For the scheme, during the procurement tender, two jewelers namely Kalyan Jewellers and Joyalukkas won the bid. The ratio is of 70:30 -- 70% to Joyalukkas and 30% to Kalyan Jewellers.

Under the scheme, Kalyan Jewellers will supply 38,550 gold rings and Joyalukkas will supply 89,949 gold rings. For the scheme, Joyalukkas and Kalyan won by bidding 1 paisa.

Now, under the scheme, the eligible parents are not required to visit these jewelers to claim the 1-gram gold. It is the Tamil Nadu government who procures the gold rings from these jewelers. The 1 paisa bid of Joyalukkas is for additional costs like making charges, insurance, transportation, packaging, and BIS hallmarking—not for the gold itself.

Hence, in cases of rise or fall in gold rates of the state, the government's effective cost to procure these rings will also rise or fall. Earlier, reports have said that the cost of procuring 1 gram gold ring would range between Rs 13,600 to Rs 14,900 per ring depending upon the prevailing gold prices. On October 6th, 2026, the cost of 1 gram gold in 22-carat is Rs 13,660.

In simple terms:

Chennai gold rate ↑ → government procurement cost ↑
Chennai gold rate ↓ → government procurement cost ↓

However, the rise and fall of gold rates is not the burden of the eligible citizens. It will be borne by the government.
