We often do not bother to know what happens to the tax deducted at source (TDS) from our salaries mentioned in the payslip.
Well, if your company does not deposit the TDS from your salary with the Income Tax (IT) department, your Form 16 (which shows the TDS from your salary) and 26AS (shows the tax deposited against your PAN) of the income tax will not match. This will turn into an IT litigation and a demand notice will be sent to you.
How to check this mismatch?
TDS returns filing
Companies are required the TDS on a quarterly basis (3 month cycle). The last date to submit the TDS is the last working day of the month after the end of the quarter. So the TDS for the January to March quarter needs to be filed by April 30th.
Your Form 26AS will be updated on April 30th. You can ideally check this Form one week after the last date.
Visit the official IT e-filing website. Login with your User ID and password. Your User ID will be your PAN.
Choose "View Form 26AS (Tax Credit)" from "My Account."
Click on confirm from the next page.
Click on the "View Tax Credit" hyperlink in the page below.
Select the assessment year you want to check and select "PDF" from "view as". Enter the verification code given in the box.
Then click on view/download to download the form.
Note that it is password protected. The password is your date of birth as per pan in ddmmyyyy format.
Receive SMS Alerts
The IT department also sends you an SMS to your registered phone number to inform you of TDS filing. If you want to change your registered number go to "profile settings." Click on "my profile" and change your number.
