In a significant shift, top banks in India, including HDFC Bank, Axis Bank, and ICICI Bank, are redefining the landscape of premium credit card features. The once-generous lounge access privileges are taking a hit, leaving credit cardholders grappling with the changes. Recent data from Dreamfolks, a leading player in airport services, indicates a noteworthy trend, shedding light on the evolving dynamics in the credit card industry.
Between July and September 2023, a staggering 2.73 million individuals availed of lounge services through their credit cards, compared to 2.63 million in the preceding quarter. Despite the changing scenario, there seems to be a consistent reliance on these facilities, challenging the notion that the heyday of credit card lounge access is over.

Industry experts attribute these cutbacks to the surge in lounge access costs. A Live from a Lounge analysis underscores the financial strain, revealing a 60% increase in the average cost per lounge visit over the past two years. Two years ago, banks spent approximately Rs 600 per visit; however, by the second quarter of FY24 (July-September 2024), this cost skyrocketed to Rs 990. Insiders reveal that lounge access costs now constitute 0.25% of the product cost, prompting banks to reevaluate and adjust their benefit structures.
In response to these industry transformations, we've compiled a list of credit cards offering the best lounge access benefits as of November 2023, according to Paisabazaar:
SBI Elite Credit Card

Lounge Access: Up to six international and eight domestic visits annually

Axis Bank Select Credit Card

SBI Prime Credit Card

As credit card users navigate these changes, the focus is shifting from sheer quantity to quality benefits. The key lies in choosing a card that aligns with individual spending habits and lifestyle preferences. While some banks are scaling back on lounge access, others are enhancing their offerings with a range of rewards and perks, creating a dynamic landscape for credit card users in India. As the credit card industry adapts to these shifts, consumers can expect a continued evolution in the features and benefits offered by their premium cards.
