Sam Bankman-Fried

Samuel Bankman-Fried, born on March 5, 1992, in Stanford, California, is the son of Stanford Law School professors Barbara Fried and Joseph Bankman. He attended Canada/USA Mathcamp and Crystal Springs Uplands School before graduating from MIT in 2014 with a bachelor's in physics and a minor in mathematics. Bankman-Fried worked as an intern at Jane Street Capital in 2013 and co-founded the quantitative trading firm Alameda Research in 2017. In 2019, he founded the FTX cryptocurrency derivatives exchange, which later moved from Hong Kong to the Bahamas in 2021. Bankman-Fried's views on charity and market regulation have evolved over time, as he supports effective altruism and donating to charity, but later admitted that his advocacy for crypto regulation was just for public relations. FTX faced bankruptcy after Binance CEO Changpeng Zhao announced plans to sell FTX's token, leading to a decline in its price and other cryptocurrencies. Bankman-Fried was arrested in the Bahamas on December 12, 2022, and extradited to the United States, where he faced several charges including wire fraud, securities fraud, and money laundering. He pleaded not guilty to these charges but was found guilty on all counts of fraud and conspiracy on November 2, 2023. Bankman-Fried has also made significant political contributions and launched the Protect Our Future PAC with $10 million in funding. The FTX scandal resulted in investigations, lawsuits, and scrutiny of the cryptocurrency industry. Bankman-Fried's sentencing hearing is scheduled for March 28, 2024. Despite the ongoing legal proceedings, Bankman-Fried has been involved in philanthropic efforts, including pandemic prevention contributions and attempts to recoup donations made to politicians, celebrities, and charities.
