His mother was a professor of mathematics, and his father had a shop selling survey and drawing equipment. In 1967, at the age of 16, Khan moved to the United States to study at the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in industrial engineering in 1971.
