9 Carat Gold Explained: Is It Better Than 22K, 24K and 18K Gold for Jewellery Buyers?

9-carat gold has gained popularity in the past few years while gold prices have reached record highs before falling this year. Still, for the common man, the question remains if it is worth buying 9K yellow metal jewelry or if traditional 22K and 24K should be the right choice despite the staggering value of the metal.

Gold prices on Monday rose after the US-Iran conflict showed signs of a pause, and oil prices cooled off slightly. At the same time, investors awaited the US Federal Reserve's monetary policy decision on Wednesday. Gold rate in India (retail) on Monday for 24K rose Rs 930 to Rs 1,45,860 for 10 grams, according to Goodreturns.in.

At the Multi Commodity Exchange of India, gold traded up 0.56% at Rs 1,43,911 and US Spot gold was trading well over $4,000 per ounce at around 1400 IST on Monday.

What is 9 Carat Gold?

9 carat gold is made of 37.5% pure gold and 62.5% other metals like copper, silver, or zinc, which makes it stronger to hold.

With the rising price of the yellow metal, many jewellers have opted for this kind of gold ornament, which costs less than high-karat gold and has a soft yellow color. Some of the prominent jewellers like Mia by Tanishq (Tata Group) and Palmonas have collections of 9-carat jewellery.

9K vs 24K vs 22K Gold: What Is the Difference?

There is obviously a difference between these carats. But to understand it clearly, all are gold.

Now, 24 carat is almost 99% pure gold, but if we want to make jewellery out of it, the gold tends to bend as it is fragile, so most gold coins and bars are made out of 24K gold, and the gold price for 24K is also more than 22k or 18k gold because of its purity.

22K gold has 91.6% pure gold and the remaining 8.4% other metals like silver, copper, or zinc. This gold contains 22 parts pure gold and 2 parts of alloy, thus making it one of the most popular choices for gold jewellery in India.

Prices also vary. 24K is the purest form of gold and thus more expensive than any other. 9K is relatively the cheapest form of gold and can be used for light jewellery.

It's better for your pocket and easy to carry and use. Which one is better depends completely on your own preferences. If you love heavy jewellery, go for higher carats, but if you are an office goer and want lighter jewellery for everyday use,9 carat gold jewellery can be a good option.
