Apollo Micro Systems Partners with IIT-Chennai and Indian Navy to Boost Defence Innovation in India

Apollo Micro Systems Limited (AMS), a leader in defence and aerospace technology, has entered into a Joint Development Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology, Chennai (IIT-Chennai) and the Indian Navy, represented by the Directorate General of Naval Armament Inspection (DGNAI). This collaboration aims to enhance India's self-reliance in defence through innovative research and development.

The MoU was exchanged at the Swavalamban 2025 event in New Delhi, witnessed by Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh. This agreement aligns with the "Aatmanirbhar Bharat" initiative, focusing on self-reliance in defence. The partnership aims to address current and future challenges faced by the Armed Forces through indigenous research and development.

Defence Innovation Partnership in India

IIT-Chennai will lead the initial design stages as the Research Anchor, focusing on developing innovative technologies and intellectual property. Apollo Micro Systems Limited will transform this research into battlefield-ready products using its extensive experience and advanced production capabilities. DGNAI will provide operational insights and ensure new products meet military standards.

The collaboration highlights India's strengths in academic research, military expertise, and industrial manufacturing. "This unique tripartite agreement leverages the core strengths of India's defence ecosystem: academic research, military domain expertise, and industrial manufacturing capacity," stated AMS in a stock exchange filing.

Mr. Karunakar Reddy, Managing Director of AMS, remarked on the strategic importance of this partnership. He said it addresses critical challenges faced by the Armed Forces through a comprehensive approach. The synergy between IIT-Chennai's research excellence, AMS's manufacturing capabilities, and DGNAI's operational mandate creates a robust ecosystem for indigenisation.

He further noted that this model ensures new technologies are mission-relevant and ready for deployment on naval platforms. This reduces reliance on foreign imports and strengthens India's self-reliance in defence capabilities. "Together, we are poised to deliver next-generation solutions that enhance national security," he added.

Expanding Collaborative Efforts

The partnership is expected to extend beyond naval applications to include products for the Indian Army, Indian Airforce, Space, and other domains. The multidisciplinary capabilities of IIT-Chennai and AMS promise to bring significant value to making India self-reliant in defence technology.

The MoU exchange at Swavalamban 2025 underscores a shift towards collaborative R&D models. The focus will be on high-tech areas crucial to modern warfare, such as Electronic Warfare systems and precision guidance solutions. Successful projects under this MoU will contribute significantly to achieving self-reliance in critical defence technologies.

Apollo Micro Systems Limited has been a pioneer in defence technology for 40 years, specialising in engineering, electrical, and electro-mechanical systems. This partnership marks a significant step towards strengthening India's position as a hub for defence manufacturing.
