Kharg Island Strike: U.S. Military Action Shapes Oil Market and Iran's Strategic Threshold

U.S. President Donald Trump said the U.S. military struck Iran’s Kharg Island on Friday. Trump described it as a major bombing raid. The action added to a conflict that had already shaken energy markets. Brent crude oil futures moved above $100 per barrel for a second straight session.

Trump posted on Truth Social that U.S. Central Command hit military sites on the island. Analysts often call Kharg Island Iran’s "oil lifeline" due to export links. The island sits in the northern Persian Gulf. Its position also places it near the Strait of Hormuz shipping route.

Trump described the raid in a Truth Social post. Trump wrote: "Moments ago, at my direction, the United States Central Command executed one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East, and totally obliterated every MILITARY target in Iran's crown jewel, Kharg Island," and added that non-military facilities were spared for now.

In the same message, Trump said he had "chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil Infrastructure on the Island." Trump then warned: "However, should Iran, or anyone else, do anything to interfere with the Free and Safe Passage of Ships through the Strait of Hormuz, I will immediately reconsider this decision," linking restraint to maritime security.

Less than an hour later, Trump added another Truth Social post about Iran’s intent. Trump wrote: "Iran had plans of taking over the entire Middle East, and completely obliterating Israel. JUST LIKE IRAN ITSELF, THOSE PLANS ARE NOW DEAD!" The post signalled a wider regional framing for the campaign.

Trump also spoke to reporters before boarding Air Force One for Florida late on Friday. Trump said the operation will continue "as long as necessary." Asked about the possible duration, Trump replied: "I can't tell you that. I mean, I have my own idea." Trump added: "I won't give you a time but we are way ahead of schedule."

Kharg Island strategy, "unconditional surrender", and escalation risks

Reporters asked what "unconditional surrender" meant in the Iran war context. Trump answered: "To me it means very simply that we are in a position of dominance that nobody has seen before, whether or not they're able to say the words..." Analysts said any move to seize Kharg Island could raise geopolitical risks.

Kharg Island is a coral landmass about five miles long. It lies roughly 15 miles off Iran’s mainland coast. It handles around 90% of Iran’s crude exports. The terminal can load about 7 million barrels per day. The hub is central to Iran’s foreign revenue from oil sales.

Although U.S. and Israeli-led strikes hit multiple Iranian sites for nearly two weeks, Kharg Island had stayed untouched. An Axios report on March 7 cited four unnamed sources. It said the Trump administration had discussed seizing the island. That suggested planners viewed it as a leverage point.

White House officials earlier argued oil prices could fall after Operation Epic Fury ends. White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president "wisely" keeps all options available. A Planet Labs Pbc satellite image dated February 25, 2026 showed the terminal before strikes.

Kharg Island Strike drives oil markets

Energy analysts said capturing or badly damaging Kharg Island would likely need ground troops. Leaders appeared cautious about that step. U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth earlier did not rule out ground forces. Hegseth also said the U.S. did not plan to get bogged down in Iran.

Brent futures closed above $100 per barrel for the second straight day on Friday. The benchmark rose more than 40% since the Iran war began. Analysts warned that prolonged disruption near the Strait of Hormuz could keep prices elevated. The report also credited CNBC's Riya Bhattacharjee for additional reporting.
