Kisan Credit Card in India Expands Coverage and Embraces Digital Updates
India’s Kisan Credit Card (KCC) helps farmers fund sowing and other farm needs. It offers lower-cost, formal credit through banks. This reduces dependence on informal lenders during peak input periods. The Kisan Credit Card scheme has also widened coverage beyond crops. It now supports several allied activities linked to rural incomes.
KCC was introduced to give timely, affordable credit for agriculture-related costs. It covers spending on seeds, fertilisers, and pesticides during the season. The scope also includes dairy farming, poultry, fisheries, animal husbandry and beekeeping. Farmers can draw money when required across the farming cycle, instead of taking lump sums.
Eligibility includes individual farmers and joint borrowers who own and cultivate land. The scheme also includes tenant farmers and sharecroppers in different forms. Oral lessees are covered too, where applicable under lending norms. Group-based borrowing is allowed through Self Help Groups and joint liability groups.
| Category | Coverage under KCC | Individual and joint borrowers | Owners cultivating agricultural land |
|---|---|
| Tenant-related categories | Tenant sharecroppers, oral lessees, sharecroppers |
| Groups | SHGs and JLGs, including tenant and sharecropper groups |
| Marginal farmers | Flexi KCC limits of Rs 10,000 to Rs 50,000 for five years |
Commercial banks, regional rural banks and cooperative banks issue KCC to eligible borrowers. Applicants can visit a nearby branch and request the KCC form. Many banks also allow form downloads through official websites. Online applications are available via JanSamarth or myScheme, depending on service availability and bank support.

Kisan Credit Card (KCC) uses and Digital India updates in the Kisan Credit Card scheme
KCC credit can support cultivation, harvesting, storage, marketing, and household needs. It aims to improve farm productivity through reliable institutional finance. Key covered segments include marginal farmers and allied sectors like fisheries, dairy and animal husbandry. With a focus on 'Digital India', features include a one-page form and PM Kisan data integration.
Paperwork is also reduced through common service centres and the Kisan Rin Portal. These options help borrowers submit details with fewer steps. The broader design keeps credit access open across crops and allied work. For many households, KCC links seasonal funding needs with formal channels, while limiting high-interest informal borrowing.
