Thailand Cambodia Border Clashes Escalate as Trump Renewed in Diplomacy Efforts

Fighting between Thailand and Cambodia entered a third day, with artillery exchanges, mutual accusations and mass evacuations, while United States President Donald Trump said he would again step in by phone after earlier brokering a ceasefire between the neighbours in July.

Officials in Bangkok and Phnom Penh reported that hundreds of thousands of residents had been moved from frontier areas. By Tuesday night, Cambodia's Defence Ministry said nine civilians were killed and 20 seriously injured, while Thai authorities reported four soldiers killed and 68 wounded during the latest clashes.

Both governments described large-scale movements of people away from the border, as shells landed near villages and transport routes. Thai commanders said operations aimed to reduce Cambodia's capacity to fire across the frontier, while Cambodian officials alleged that Thai forces struck homes and other civilian locations using heavy artillery systems.

Thailand Cambodia Border Clashes Rise, Trump Mediation

Tension had already increased after Thailand halted de-escalation measures last month. Those steps were part of an agreement both sides endorsed at an October summit attended by Trump. Bangkok said it froze the process after a Thai soldier was severely injured by a landmine that Thailand claimed Cambodia had recently laid, an allegation Cambodia rejected.

The current escalation followed five days of heavy combat in July, when at least 48 people died in cross-border fighting. During that earlier flare-up, Trump used ongoing trade discussions with both countries as leverage to help secure a temporary ceasefire between Thailand and Cambodia after repeated exchanges of fire.

Thailand's foreign minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow told Reuters that pressure through tariffs should not be used to compel Bangkok into talks. This position came even though Trump had relied on aspects of the United States' trade relationship when helping arrange the July truce between Thailand and Cambodia, after intense battles near the border.

Thailand and Cambodia conflict negotiations and mediation

Sihasak Phuangketkeow said in an interview on Tuesday that the situation was not suitable for negotiations on the border dispute. Sihasak also argued that external mediation would not succeed, despite Trump's earlier role in diplomacy between Thailand and Cambodia when tensions surged during previous clashes.

A senior adviser to Cambodia's Prime Minister Hun Manet offered a contrasting view in comments to Reuters. Phnom Penh, the adviser said, was "ready to talk at any time." Cambodia's stance differed from Thailand's resistance, especially regarding any mediation that might be linked to trade conditions or potential tariff measures.

Thailand and Cambodia conflict and Trump's renewed role

Speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania on Tuesday, Trump referred to several disputes that Trump said had cooled after United States involvement. Trump cited tensions between Pakistan and India, and between Israel and Iran, before mentioning Southeast Asia and the new round of hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia along their contested frontier.

Trump told supporters: "I hate to say this one, named Cambodia-Thailand, and it started up today and tomorrow I am going to have to make a phone call. Who else could say I'm going to make a phone call and stop a war of two very powerful countries, Thailand and Cambodia."

Officials on both sides continued to exchange blame for the latest surge in violence, even as casualty figures mounted and displaced civilians increased. The combination of stalled talks, competing narratives over landmines and artillery use, and references to trade pressure left the Thailand and Cambodia conflict open, with further developments hinging on diplomatic and military decisions in Bangkok, Phnom Penh and Washington.
