Trump Expresses Admiration for Modi and Considers Visit to India Amid Ongoing Trade Discussions

United States President Donald Trump recently expressed his admiration for Prime Minister Narendra Modi and hinted at a potential visit to India in the coming year. This announcement coincides with ongoing trade discussions between the two countries. Speaking from the White House, Trump highlighted his positive rapport with PM Modi, emphasising their strong personal connection.

During a press briefing, Trump noted that PM Modi had significantly curtailed India's purchases from Russia. "He is a friend of mine, and we speak," Trump stated. He also mentioned that PM Modi had extended an invitation for him to visit India, which he is considering. When asked about his travel plans, Trump responded positively about the possibility of visiting India next year.

The backdrop to these discussions is the imposition of a 50 per cent tariff by the United States on India's purchase of Russian oil. This includes an additional 25 per cent duty. Despite these challenges, trade talks between New Delhi and Washington continue as both sides seek common ground.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt recently commented on the positive trajectory of India-US relations. She noted that President Trump values this relationship highly. A few weeks ago, during Diwali celebrations at the Oval Office, Trump directly communicated with PM Modi, underscoring their rapport.

In response to Trump's remarks about reducing Russian oil imports, India's Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) reiterated its stance on energy sourcing. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasised that India's import policies are driven by national interests and consumer welfare. He stated that safeguarding Indian consumers in a volatile energy market remains a priority.

During his Asia tour, President Trump acknowledged India's efforts regarding Russian oil imports. He praised New Delhi's approach and mentioned assurances from PM Modi about reducing or halting crude imports from Moscow.

The ongoing dialogue between the US and India reflects their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties despite existing trade tensions. As discussions progress, both nations aim to address mutual concerns while fostering economic cooperation.
