US Stock Market Closed On Monday For Diwali? Here's What Will Impact Dow Jones, Nasdaq, S&P 500 From Nov 9-13
Several states in the USA carry statewide Diwali holidays, and this year is no different. States like Connecticut, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and California have declared Diwali holidays for their Hindu citizens. However, since the main Diwali falls on Sunday, it will be carried forward to Monday. Does Wall Street practice a Diwali holiday?

USA Diwali Holiday
Connecticut, North Carolina, California, and Pennsylvania have declared state legal holidays for Diwali on November 8, 2026. Since the day is a Sunday, all offices are generally closed. This holiday will not be carried forward on Monday.
US Stock Market Holiday For Diwali 2026: Is Wall Street Open On Monday?
The US stock market holiday is different from state-wide holidays, public holiday or federal holidays in general. The Nasdaq and NYSE, which are two main exchanges of Wall Street, only observe selective national holidays along with Thanksgiving and Christmas. Accordingly, trading on the Dow Jones, S&P 500, and Nasdaq will be opened for buying and selling in market-related instruments on Monday, November 8, 2026. Diwali is not considered a nationwide holiday in the USA.
In November, Nasdaq and NYSE will be closed on November 26, 2026, for Thanksgiving and will have an half-day on November 27, 2026.
Dow Jones + Nasdaq + S&P 500 Weekly Performance:
For the trading week from November 2-6, the Dow Jones Industrial Average or DJIA dropped by 722.50 points or 1.4% to end at 51,285.73. On the contrary, Nasdaq Composite witnessed one of its worst weekly crash by 2,613.92 points or 9.61% to end the week at 24,579.42. S&P 500 emerged as second worst performer with 3.07% or 233.97 points drop to 7,376.86.
Wall Street posted one of its worst one-day losses last week since April 2025, which was due to sharp selloffs in Nasdaq. As per Trading Economics, concerns that Democratic midterm wins could lead to tighter AI-industry regulation and lower sector investment drove investors out of tech and AI-related stocks, triggering a broader risk-off mood. However, a chipmaker rebound propped up the market as dip buyers emerged, leading technology stocks to a sharp recovery. Nvidia gained 2.8%, Micron 5.1%, AMD 11%, SpaceX 8.6%, Tesla 4.2%, Intel 7.7%, and Lam Research 8.2%. Among hyperscalers, Alphabet and Meta each gained 0.8%. On the data front, nonfarm payrolls topped estimates and the unemployment rate edged lower. For the week, the S&P 500 lost 3.2%, the Dow 1.7%, and the Nasdaq 5.5%.
On November 5th, the market valuation of Wall Street stocks nosedived by $3.2 trillion as AI concerns continue to send investors in a jittery.
The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq-100 appear to have broken key levels of support, completing their double-top patterns. The Russell 2000's near-term bounce was stalled at the 50-day moving average (SMA) followed by a nasty break below the 200-day SMA. Semiconductors also continued their downtrend, as they are trading roughly 15% below their 200-day SMA at the time of this writing on Thursday. Conversely, crude oil, despite its aggressive sell-off this week, appeared to have held support at its 200-day, as per Charles Schwab data.
US Stock Market Weekly Outlook For November 9-13:
As per Rachel Dashiell, Head of Technical Research and Strategy within Charles Schwab, volatility could continue to remain elevated, with the Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) above 20, representing roughly 1.26% daily move in the S&P 500. As yields, as well as energy and commodities appear to soften, bond prices are showing signs of a potential bottom.
"I am going to stick with a "higher volatility" forecast for next week, along with a "bearish" outlook, given Thursday's technical damage and continued rotation toward more defensive areas of the market," Rachel added.
What could change her forecast? She said, technology has been sold aggressively across the board, pushing several measures into oversold territory. While oversold conditions can persist during strong downtrends, historically they have also increased the potential for a near-term countertrend bounce. Such a rebound, particularly if accompanied by improving breadth and renewed Technology leadership, could challenge the bearish outlook.
