Alain Bouchard: Career Highlights
Bouchard's career in the retail industry began at the age of 19 when he worked as a stock boy in his brother's milk store. In 1969, he was hired by Perrette, a convenience store chain, to scout and set up new stores. During his time at Perrette, he opened 100 out of the company's 184 stores.
However, Bouchard left Perrette due to concerns about employee treatment. He then joined Provi-Soir as the head of development, construction, and real estate. While working at Provi-Soir, he attended business courses at HEC Montreal and studied English.
Using earnings from private real estate investments, Bouchard bought two Provi-Soir franchises. In 1980, he founded Alimentation Couche-Tard, which would later become one of the largest convenience store chains in the world. Bouchard served as the CEO of Alimentation Couche-Tard from 1980 to 2014, leading the company's expansion from one convenience store to over 12,500 worldwide.
Bouchard's leadership style emphasized decentralized organization and the adoption of the best ideas within the company. Under his leadership, Alimentation Couche-Tard acquired U.S.-based Circle K in 2003, further solidifying its position in the convenience store industry.
