Brijmohan Lall Munjal started a bicycle parts business with his brothers in Amritsar. In 1954, he founded Hero Cycles Limited in Ludhiana. He obtained a license from the Punjab government to manufacture bicycles in 1956, and by 1975, Hero Cycles had become the largest bicycle company in India. In 1986, it entered the Guinness Book as the world's largest bicycle company.
Munjal also established Hero Majestic Company for scooters and mopeds. In 1984, he signed a deal with Honda Motors of Japan and set up a plant in Dharuhera, Haryana, for Hero Honda motorcycles. The company launched its first bike, CD 100, in 1985 and achieved significant success, selling millions of motorcycles daily.
After exiting the joint venture with Honda in 2011, the company was renamed Hero MotoCorp. Munjal paid royalties to Honda Company to use the Hero Honda brand until 2013, which also granted Hero MotoCorp access to export markets where Honda had business.
