After graduating with an M.B.A. from Wake Forest in 1976, he worked as a financial analyst for Frito-Lay before venturing into professional gambling. In 1980, he co-founded EchoSphere Corporation with his future wife Candy and Jim DeFranco, laying the foundation for his success in the satellite television industry.

In 1990, Ergen made a bold move by raising $335 million in junk bonds to purchase orbital slots for satellites. This strategic decision paved the way for EchoStar's future growth and expansion. In 1992, he obtained a DBS license from the Federal Communications Commission, further solidifying EchoStar's position in the industry.

Incorporated in 1993, EchoStar Communications witnessed remarkable growth under Ergen's leadership. The company's net income doubled to $20.4 million, showcasing Ergen's exceptional business acumen and strategic vision.
