Now, the government made quoting the national ID number mandatory for filing Income Tax returns and also processing of Permanent Account Number (PAN) applications from July 1, 2017. More than a 100 million school children in India will compulsorily need the 12-digit unique identification number to avail their mid-day meal from 1 July. The central government has given children and their parent's time till 30 June to get the Aadhaar in case they don't have one so far.
Aadhaar was also made compulsory for scholarships and other schemes for backward castes and the disabled.
The government aims to make Aadhaar card mandatory for all driving license applications and renewals soon. The plans will be put in effect by October this year. Using Aadhaar will counter the issuance of multiple licenses under different Regional Transport Offices to the same person.
