Aadhaar program was launched in 2009. In the initial phase, it was difficult to enroll for the Adhaar card. Now it functions as a unique and universal identity card for the citizens of India. Aadhar Card has now become a necessity more than ever before.

From getting the driving license to avail free mid-day meals, the government is making Aadhaar card mandatory for many things. Know the uses of Aadhaar card now:

Aadhaar-based re-verification has been made mandatory for all existing subscribers of mobile phone services now. The government is instructing telecom operators to initiate the process soon.

Aadhaar mandatory for availing subsidized foodgrains from the ration shops. The Department of Food and Consumer Affairs has issued a Notification under Aadhaar Act on February 8 which requires individual beneficiaries having ration cards under NFSA to furnish proof of possession of Aadhaar number or undergo Aadhaar authentication to receive subsidies under NFSA (i.e. subsidized food grains or cash Transfer of Food Subsidy under NFSA). The government has given time to those not having the biometric-based unique identification number to apply for Aadhaar by June 30.

More than a 100 million school children in India will compulsorily need the 12-digit unique identification number to avail their mid-day meal from 1 July. The central government has given children and their parent's time till 30 June to get the Aadhaar in case they don't have one so far.

The government aims to make Aadhaar card mandatory for all driving license applications and renewals soon. The plans will be put in effect by October this year. Using Aadhaar will counter the issuance of multiple licenses under different Regional Transport Offices to the same person. Biometrics of Aadhaar card is expected to make the verification process easier.
