It is mandatory to link Permanent Account Number (PAN) to Aadhaar number by July 31 this year to pay income taxes. The move is to curb tax fraud through the use of multiple PAN cards.

However, there are many issues that you could face due to the use of special characters in the initials and punctuation in names, and changes in surnames. In short, sometimes the exact name on the other, may not match the exact name on the PAN card. Here are things you need to know about how to modify the difference in names in both Aadhaar card and PAN card so they match.

    Name change

If there is the difference in the names in Aadhaar card and PAN card, it will be a problem. You have to apply for a name correction in any of your identity proofs. Name correction in Aadhaar and PAN card is a time-consuming process. The government is offering a solution for this now if your name on the Aadhaar does not match your name on the PAN card, you can upload a scanned copy of PAN to get the work done. Through OTP

The tax department is planning to introduce an option on the e-filing portal through which taxpayers can choose to link the Aadhaar without changing the name by opting for a One-Time Password (OTP), provided that the year of birth of the person matches in both documents.

    Change in spellings

With the linking of PAN with Aadhaar being made mandatory, individuals can log on to e-filing website of the income tax department or NSDL, but the seeding cannot happen if the name is differently spelled in the two cards like the use of the full name in PAN and initials in Aadhaar. How To Get PAN Card Within Two Days?
