It is mandatory to link Permanent Account Number (PAN) to Aadhaar number by July 31 this year to pay income taxes. The move is to curb tax fraud through the use of multiple PAN cards.

However, there are many issues that you could face due to the use of special characters in the initials and punctuation in names, and changes in surnames. In short, sometimes the exact name on the other, may not match the exact name on the PAN card. Here are things you need to know about how to modify the difference in names in both Aadhaar card and PAN card so they match.

If there is the difference in the names in Aadhaar card and PAN card, it will be a problem. You have to apply for a name correction in any of your identity proofs. An individual can log into the Aadhaar website and request for a change in the name. This process will be verified using a one-time password on the phone number registered with the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI)

The income tax department has started an option in the e-filing portal through which taxpayers can choose to link the Aadhaar without changing the name by opting for a One-Time Password (OTP), provided that the year of birth of the person matches in both documents.
