Clayton Mathile's career journey began as an accountant at a General Motors manufacturing plant in Toledo, Ohio. He then joined the Campbell Soup Company, where he held various positions in cost accounting, inventory control, and purchasing. In 1970, he took on a leadership role at The Iams Food Company in Dayton, Ohio, a small regional pet food manufacturer.

In 1975, Clayton Mathile made a pivotal decision that would shape his entrepreneurial success. He purchased a 50% ownership interest in Iams from its founder, Paul Iams, for $100,000. This investment saved the company from financial difficulties and marked the beginning of Clayton Mathile's remarkable journey as the sole owner and CEO of The Iams Company.

Under Clayton Mathile's leadership, The Iams Company experienced tremendous growth. He focused on product quality, research and development, and customer outreach, leading the company to capture a 5.7% share of the U.S. pet food market and achieve international sales in 75 countries by 1999.

In a landmark deal, Clayton Mathile sold The Iams Company to Procter & Gamble for $2.3 billion in 1999. This transaction not only brought him immense financial success but also demonstrated his commitment to sharing his wealth. He distributed $100 million to Iams employees, committed $100 million to community projects, and shared portions with his children.
