Kuwaiti Dinar

The currency of Kuwait is known as Kuwaiti Dinar. Its code is KWD. It is sub-divided into 1,000 fils. As of fiscal 2021, the Kuwaiti Dinar was one of the strongest circulating currencies in the globe with one Kuwaiti Dinar equal to 3.32 U.S. dollars.

The Kuwaiti dinar is issued by the Central Bank of Kuwait and the Central Bank of Iraq. The dinar was introduced in 1961 to replace the Gulf rupee, equal to the Indi n rupee. Earlier, it was equivalent to one pound sterling.

In 1990, when Iraq invaded Kuwait, the Iraqi dinar was replaced by the Kuwaiti dinar. The currency and a large number of banknotes were taken away by the invading forces. Post liberation, the Kuwaiti dinar was restored as Kuwait’s currency and even new banknote series were also introduced. The previously stolen notes were demonetized.

So far, six series of Kuwaiti dinar banknotes have been printed. The first series of banknotes were issued in 1960. This series was in circulation in the country between April 1, 1961, to February 1, 1982, and had denominations of ¼, ½, 1, 5 and 10 dinars.
