United Arab Emirates Dirham

The United Arab Emirates Dirham is the currency of the United Arab Emirates. It is abbreviated as AED. The dirham is further subdivided into 100 fils. It is also known as Emirati dirham or DH or Dhs. The word dirham is an Arabic word. It is used for several centuries for trade. The dirham has survived through the Ottoman Empire.

Earlier in 1966, all the emirates which now form UAE used the Gulf rupee, which was partly pegged at the Indian rupee. On June 6, 1966, India decided to devalue the Gulf rupee against the Indian rupee. The Arab countries did not accept the devaluation. Several of the states still using the Gulf rupee adopted their own or other currencies.

The dirham is issued by the Central Bank of the UAE. In 1973, the UAE adopted the UAE dirham as its currency. Abu Dhabi adopted the UAE dirham instead of Bahraini dinar at 1 dinar = 10 dirhams, other emirates, the Dubai and Qatar – Riyal was exchanged at par. The Dubai Currency – UAE Dirhams is compared to be relatively cheaper than the Indian Rupee.
