In India, many households in the rural and remote areas still use the age-old ancient fuel like dung cakes, coal, firewood and so on to cook food. The smoke which emits out of this will create pollution at an alarming rate and this will even affect the health of the women and children causing serious respiratory-related health problems.

To bring in a change to the cooking environment, the central government of India has launched the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY). Under this scheme, the rural households especially those families which fall in BPL (below poverty line) will be provided with an LPG gas cylinder connection with a support of Rs 1,600 per each connection. The connection will be issued in the name of the women of the household and the government has already sanctioned Rs 8,000 crores towards the implementation of this programme.

In the state of Andaman & Nicobar Islands around 7,195 number of connections are released as on October 23, 2018.
