LPG Price in Maharashtra (16th April 2024)

The LPG price in Maharashtra is mainly determined by the state-run oil companies and the same is subject to change on a monthly basis based on the global crude fuel rates. The rise in crude oil leads to a rise in the LPG rates in Maharashtra and vice-versa. LPG is a safe and colourless gas and hence its use has tremendously increased in the domestic and industrial sector. The government of India is currently providing domestic LPG Gas cylinder (14.2 kgs) in Maharashtra at subsidized rates to the low-income section of the society. The subsidy amount will be directly transferred to the customer’s bank account. Currently, the cooking gas in India is easily accessible to most of the people. The Domestic LPG cylinder price in Maharashtra (Mumbai) stands at Rs. 802.50.

Moreover, the Indian government's policies play a pivotal role in the pricing of LPG. Subsidies and taxes are significant factors that can mitigate or exacerbate the impact of global crude oil price fluctuations on domestic LPG prices. For instance, if the government decides to increase subsidies on LPG, the effect of a spike in crude oil prices might be cushioned for the end consumers. However, a reduction in subsidies or an increase in taxes could have the opposite effect, making LPG more expensive even if crude oil prices are stable or falling.

Procedure to link Aadhaar Number with Bharat Gas

With the recent introduction of Direct Transfer Scheme by the government of India, the gas consumers in India have to link their bank accounts to LPG gas connection to receive the subsidy amount to their respective bank accounts. The government of India is providing domestic cylinders to all the needy households in the country at subsidized rates to help them to use the natural and bio-environmental LPG gas at a lesser price compared to the market price. At the time of delivery of the LPG cylinder the customer will pay the entire amount of the cylinder at market price and post delivery, the government will credit the subsidy amount on the domestic cylinder to the customer’s bank account directly.

The intention of directly transferring the subsidy amount to the customer's bank account has been done to eliminate the possibility of a customer not receiving subsidized amount on cylinders for many reasons.

Impact of Global Crude Oil on LPG Prices in Maharashtra

The dynamics of global crude oil prices have a significant impact on various sectors worldwide, particularly on the pricing of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG) in regions such as Maharashtra, India. The correlation between these two commodities is crucial for both consumers and policymakers to understand, as it directly influences household budgets and economic strategies.

In recent times, Maharashtra has witnessed a noticeable fluctuation in LPG prices, a phenomenon largely attributed to the volatility of crude oil prices on the international market. This relationship underscores the dependency of LPG pricing on the broader, global energy market, making it susceptible to geopolitical events, supply-demand mismatches, and economic policies across oil-producing nations.

For a comprehensive understanding, it is essential to delve into the specifics of how crude oil prices affect LPG costs. Crude oil, being a primary input in the production of LPG, means that any changes in its price can have a domino effect on LPG pricing. When crude oil prices increase, the cost of producing LPG rises, leading to higher prices for consumers. Conversely, a drop in crude oil prices can make LPG more affordable.

It's also worth noting that other external factors, including exchange rates and transportation costs, contribute to the final retail price of LPG in Maharashtra. A weakening of the Indian Rupee against the US Dollar can make crude oil (which is traded internationally in dollars) more expensive, thereby increasing LPG prices. Similarly, higher transportation costs can lead to increased prices for consumers.

Understanding the intricate relationship between global crude oil prices and LPG pricing is essential for both consumers and policymakers. For consumers, it helps in budgeting and managing household expenses more effectively. For policymakers, it aids in crafting policies that ensure energy affordability and security, while also considering the broader economic implications.

As the global energy landscape continues to evolve, it remains imperative for stakeholders in regions like Maharashtra to keep a close watch on these dynamics. By doing so, they can better navigate the challenges posed by fluctuations in global crude oil prices, ensuring that the impact on LPG prices is managed in a manner that supports both economic stability and consumer welfare.
