The government of India is currently providing domestic LPG Gas cylinder (14.2 kgs) in Rajasthan at subsidized rates to the low-income section of the society. LPG rates in Rajasthan today along with other parts of the country are staying at higher levels which were recorded previously in 2013-14 tenure when inflation was at its strongest phase. A downward trend was noticed in the current ruling government tenures and by December 2020, the prices remained stable around 40% below the current price range. A consistent rise since then is witness in LPG prices across India as well as Rajasthan LP prices.

How Do LPG Prices in Rajasthan Get Affected Today

There are multiple reasons for LPG prices to get impacted today since the high dependency of middle-income groups along with 80% of India's import of crude oil demand requires government intervention for stability. Refined from petrol makes crude oil prices a very strong influence over LPG prices in Rajasthan today. However, the pointers mentioned below would impact disposable incomes of Indian residents as fuel is consistent requirements until other substitutes pick-up demand.

LPG Consumption In Rajasthan

LPG in Rajasthan like many other states is consumed by domestic households as well as for commercial purposes in restaurants, hotels, street vendors, sweet shops, temples and religious places. It is available for household usage in cylinders of 14.2 kg or commercial cylinders of 19 kg. The demand and consumption if rises consistently, basic economics helps to determine that LPG prices in Rajasthan today would stay higher than previous tenures.

However, commercial LPG rates would always stay higher than household LPG prices in Rajasthan today.

Government Intervention

There are two major reasons for the central and state governments to intervene in LPG prices locally to ensure there is stability maintained for middle-income group consumers. When the government decides to increase the revenue generated from tax collection of LPG cylinders, a slight increase can be witnessed in gas prices of India along with LPG rates in Rajasthan. In contrast, when there is election season approaching, Indian governments tend to keep fuel and natural gas prices at lower levels to provide relief in daily expenses of working class family, which would have a positive appeal for voters to vote in favour of the ruling party.

Regardless of the domestic aspects, international factors also play a major role and impact local LPG prices in Rajasthan. Since refineries consume most of the crude oil imported from international boundaries, any escalations at global levels can seriously implicate fuel prices in India. If there is a recent conflict arising in crude oil exporting countries, there is a supply disruption caused at global level and national prices are subjected to influence by it, which has impacts on local Rajasthan LPG rates today as well as other parts of the country.

What is LPG?

The word LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas. It is also known as butane or propane. It is used as a fuel for cooking purposes apart from its use in heating equipment and for powering vehicles. The LPG is prepared by refining petroleum or wet natural gas and it is mostly derived from fossil fuel sources. It is manufactured during the refining of crude oil or it is extracted from the natural gas streams as they emerge from the ground or it is derived from petroleum products.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas or LPG is recovered from the wet natural gas by absorption process. The recovered product usually has a low boiling point and should be distilled to remove the lighter fractions, later it has to be treated to remove carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulfide and water. The final finished product will be transported through the pipeline through specially built seagoing tankers. In some countries, transportation of the LPG will be done through rail, truck and barges.

The LPG cylinders which reach home for domestic usage will be under relatively low pressures. In Europe, LPG water heaters have their present largely. Apart from this, the bio-friendly fuel can also be used as an engine fuel and also for backup generators. The unique factor of LPG is it can be stored nearly for a long time without degradation.
The usage of LPG emits less carbon dioxide when compared with coal, petrol or heating oil which virtually emits black carbon and other particles to the environment. LPG acts as a driver of economic growth in most developing countries as well as in rural areas.

A countless number of people rely on liquefied petroleum gas due to its instant, reliable, transportable and constant energy factors. Increased usage of LPG will reduce desertification and deforestation.

About Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

The Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is a social welfare scheme to provide Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) connections to below poverty line (BPL) households across the country. The scheme is launched to stop the age-old method of using fire, charcoal, and dung for cooking purposes. The Yojana aims to replace the unclean cooking fuels with LPG, a clean and natural source of fuel, across the rural and remote parts of India.

The programme is designed to provide 5 crore LPG connections in the name of women members of the BPL family in the country.

Objectives of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana

The objectives of Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana are:

• To empower women and protect their health.
• To reduce the serious health hazards associated with cooking when fossil fuel is used.
• To prevent the young children in India from the significant number of acute respiratory illnesses caused due to indoor air pollution on burning the fossil fuel.
• To cut down on the number of deaths in India caused due to the use of unclean cooking fuel.

Important List of Points to Note about Rubber Tubing

  • The rubber tubing should be of an approved quality carrying the ISI mark.
  • It should be kept away from heat and fire.
  • It should be as short as possible. The ideal maximum length of a rubber tubing should be about 1.5 meters.
  • Ensure that it is easily accessible for inspection.
  • One should make sure that it does not get heated by the burner nor it should be twisted or looped.
  • Make sure to push it so that it completely covers the full length of the nozzle.
  • Always replace the tubing once in two years.
  • Check the rubber tubing regularly for cracks, holes, softness and porosity (mainly at the ends).
  • Clean the tube only with a wet cloth, and avoid using soap to ease the tube over the nozzle.
  • Do not cover the rubber tubing with any other object.

Domestic gas cylinders will not attract any taxes at present.

The Commercial cylinder, as the name suggests is meant for commercial purposes. Hotels, restaurants, eateries, food joints, and so on will rely on these commercial cylinders which are quoted in blue colour. This cylinder weighs 19 kgs. It is priced heavily and users will not be eligible to get a subsidy on these cylinders. The commercial cylinder will attract a basic customs duty of 5 per cent, additional customs duty of 8 per cent, and central excise duty of 8 per cent.

Commercial Uses of LPG

LPG or the Liquefied Petroleum Gas is used in many industries namely:

  • Food Processing – LPG is used in bakeries for the manufacture of biscuits, chips, fried items, and so on.
  • Metallurgical Industry – LPG cylinders are used in metallurgical industries where the heat treatments are conducted in a controlled environment.
  • Sanitary Ware Industry – LPG is used in the sanitary ware manufacturing industries. Apart from this, it is used in ceramic tiles and pottery units. Its clean combustion and easy to control heat have led to its usage in several industries.

What is the weight of an empty and filled LPG cylinder?

The weight of an empty LPG cylinder (Tare Weight) will be stencilled on the shroud of the cylinder on the blue band in case of a cylinder from the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited.
