Vincent "Vinnie" Viola was born in 1956 to an Italian American family in Brooklyn, New York City. He graduated from Brooklyn Technical High School and attended the United States Military Academy (West Point), where he played on the sprint football team and served as cadet company commander. Viola graduated with a bachelor's degree in 1977 and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in the U.S. Army. He served with the 101st Airborne Division at Fort Campbell and later earned a juris doctor degree from New York Law School in 1983 but didn't complete the bar exam.
