Starting with AMAG Automobil- und Motoren, a leading Swiss automobile dealership, Haefner was a pioneer in adopting IBM systems for business in Switzerland in 1957, which led to the foundation of Automation Center A.G. This venture expanded to the US and merged with Computer Associates International, Inc., making Haefner its largest individual shareholder until his passing. In 1962, he acquired Moyglare Stud Farm in Ireland, producing numerous Group One and British Classic Race winners under trainers Christophe Clement and Dermot K. Weld. His contributions to Irish racing were recognized with an honorary doctorate from Trinity College, Dublin, in 1988 and the establishment of the Moyglare Stud Stakes race in 1975.
