HSBC is among the world's leading banking and financial services organisations, with a network that spans 64 countries and territories across Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, as well as North and Latin America. The multinational bank has partnered with Google Pay to ensure the tokenization of its credit cards, allowing payments through Gpay's network for NFC (near field communications), QR Pay, and in-app transactions. Tokenization allows transfers to be done without revealing the card number, expiry date, or security code, only sharing a unique token number. Customers with HSBC Credit Cards will be able to link their cards to GPay and use it as a payment method to safely and electronically transact via their smartphones - both online and also in merchant stores - thanks to this new update. Google Pay is a quick and easy way to pay using your HSBC credit cards in applications and stores using your Mobile phone. You can now link your HSBC credit card to Google Pay in just a few minutes and start making payments. Since your card details are tokenized, they are never shared with merchants or stored on your device, and you can continue to experience the same rewards and benefits as your physical HSBC credit card. Tokenization is the method of replacing confidential data on a card, such as the card number, expiration date, and security code, with a device-specific alternate code, or "Token." Tokens are used in mobile payments to secure payment details and to mitigate the security issues associated with plastic cards. It also eliminates the risks of holding your cards physically for offline or in-store transactions.

How to add your HSBC Credit Card with Google Pay?
- Using a compatible android smartphone, download the Google Pay app from the Google Play Store.
- Now click on the 'Add Card' option to register your card
- Your HSBC credit card will be ready to use for contactless / NFC payments, in-app purchases, and QR (Bharat QR) scan pay upon successful authentication.
Steps to pay with Google Pay using HSBC Credit Card
For your HSBC credit cards, you have three payment options on Google Pay:
For in store payments using NFC
- Simply unlock your smartphone and raise it against the NFC-enabled contactless payment terminal to pay with Google Pay in store.
- Your default card, which was the first card you linked to Google Pay, will be used to make payments. By choosing an alternative card and pressing 'Set as default card,' you can update your default card at any time.
Using Bharat QR code scan
Simply scan the merchant's Bharat QR code with your smartphone to pay with Google Pay using QR code. To complete the payment, simply enter the One Time Passcode (OTP) which you will get on your registered mobile number via SMS.
For in-app purchases
- When the 'Buy with Google Pay' feature is available, you can use Google Pay to make in-app purchases. Simply enter the One Time Passcode (OTP) which you will get on your registered mobile number via SMS, and your payment will be processed instantly and safely.
- During the initial purchase process, the default credit card will be displayed. The default card for transactions inside the app can then be switched to a different card. It's likely that this is a different default card from the one used for in-store purchases.
- Please keep in mind that you won't be allowed to use your credit card with Google Pay for P2P (Person to Person) transfers.
Compatible devices
Google Pay is available for free to download from the Google Play Store and is compatible with all Android devices. Android devices running Lollipop (5.0) or higher are allowed to make payments via NFC-enabled contactless payment terminals. Google Pay is not officially available on Apple devices.
Charges
Using the HSBC credit card with Google Pay will not result in any additional fees or charges. Keep in mind, however, that any applicable interest, fees, and charges that relate to your HSBC credit card as part of the original Tariff Sheet and Terms & Conditions will also apply to transactions made with Google Pay. Any mobile phone service, internet service provider, telecommunications provider, or retailer may apply fees and charges for transactions made with your credit card using Google Pay.
Ramakrishnan S, Head-Wealth and Personal Banking, HSBC India, said in a statement that "We believe that our partnership with Google Pay through tokenization will be critical in ensuring that the security of our customers' credit card details is not compromised. We are the first international Bank in the country to go live with this capability." On its official website HSBC has also stated that "We've collaborated with Google Pay and Visa to provide enhanced security and convenience through the secure tokenization of your HSBC credit cards."
