The first solar eclipse of 2026 will occur in February and it will be an annular solar eclipse, commonly referred to as the "Ring of Fire." This type of eclipse is regarded as one of the most breathtaking celestial events due to its striking visual appearance.
Ring of Fire to Appear in February; Know What Is Annular Solar Eclipse 2026
An annular solar eclipse happens when the Moon is positioned near its apogee, which is the farthest point in its orbit from Earth. At this distance, the Moon appears slightly smaller than the Sun in the sky. As a result, it cannot completely cover the Sun, leaving a brilliant ring of sunlight visible around it.

This phenomenon is different from a total solar eclipse, where the Moon fully obscures the Sun and briefly turns day into night. In contrast, a partial solar eclipse occurs when only a portion of the Sun is hidden, making it look as though a section has been taken out of it.
Solar Eclipse 2026 Date and Time in February 2026
As per astronomical reports, the solar eclipse will commence at 3:26 PM on Tuesday, February 17, 2026 and conclude at 7:57 PM As per Indian Standard Time (IST), lasting a total of 4 hours and 31 minutes. The maximum phase of the annular, or "Ring of Fire," eclipse is expected to occur between 5:13 PM and 6:11 PM.
People located along the central path of annularity will be able to witness the "Ring of Fire" for about 2 minutes and 20 seconds, making it a brief yet spectacular sight.
Surya Grahan February 2026 Sutak Kaal
In traditional beliefs, Sutak Kaal is considered a sensitive period associated with solar and lunar eclipses. For a solar eclipse, Sutak is believed to start 12 hours before the event, while for a lunar eclipse it begins 9 hours prior. During this time, auspicious activities such as weddings, housewarming ceremonies, or starting new ventures are generally avoided.
However, religious texts clarify that Sutak is applicable only in regions where the eclipse is actually visible. Since the 17 February eclipse will not be visible in India, Sutak Kaal will not be considered valid in the country. Temples, households and public events can continue their regular schedules without following eclipse-related restrictions.
Solar Eclipse Tomorrow: Will the February 2026 Surya Grahan Be Visible in India?
The Surya Grahan in February 2026 will not be visible from any part of India. The celestial alignment will occur when the Sun is below the horizon in the country, making observation impossible for Indian viewers.
The annular eclipse path will pass over parts of Zimbabwe, Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania, Mauritius, Botswana, Mozambique, Chile and Argentina. In addition, larger regions of southern Africa, Antarctica and South America will also experience the eclipse.
Although the February 17, 2026 annular solar eclipse will not be visible in India, it remains a significant astronomical event for observers across various parts of the world.
Surya Grahan 2026 in Kumbh Rashi, Aligns With Dhanishtha Nakshatra
According to astrological interpretations, Surya Grahan 2026 will take place in Kumbh Rashi and align with Dhanishtha Nakshatra. During the peak phase, the Moon is expected to cover nearly 96 percent of the Sun's surface. However, since a thin, bright outer edge of sunlight will still be visible, astronomers classify it as an annular eclipse, popularly called the "Ring of Fire."
Surya Grahan 2026: Precautions and Restrictions
In places where the eclipse can be seen, people traditionally observe certain precautions. Many households avoid cooking fresh meals or eating prepared food during the eclipse period. Special care is often advised for pregnant women, children and elderly individuals. The use of sharp or pointed objects is also commonly avoided during the eclipse.
