Premium Vande Bharat connectivity on Rajasthan’s key tourist belt is being sharply realigned this weekend, with North Western Railway discontinuing two semi high‑speed services on the Udaipur–Jaipur and Udaipur–Agra Cantt corridors from February 14–15. The move, driven by low occupancy and rake redeployment, affects tourists and business travellers who had begun using these faster links between Jaipur, Udaipur and Agra. Regular passengers now must quickly recalibrate bookings and route choices.

According to North Western Railway, train number 20979/20980 Udaipur City–Jaipur–Udaipur City Vande Bharat Express will stop operating from February 14, while train number 20981/20982 Udaipur City–Agra Cantt–Udaipur City Vande Bharat Express will be withdrawn from February 15. Officials say both services struggled to attract sustainable ridership despite their modern amenities, prompting a review of resource use across the expanding Vande Bharat network.
North Western Railway cites low occupancy, high fares
Railway officials point to a clear gap between expectations and actual demand on these routes. Internal assessments showed consistently low passenger turnout, especially on non‑holiday weekdays, even as operating costs remained high. Ticket prices of roughly ₹1,100 for AC chair car and about ₹1,800 for executive class compared unfavourably with conventional services charging nearly ₹400 for sleeper and around ₹800 for chair car on similar sectors.
North Western Railway chief public relations officer Amit Sudarshan said the decision followed a wider rationalisation exercise aimed at “better utilisation of premium rakes on stronger demand corridors.” He underlined that Vande Bharat trains remain a “distinct category of passenger service” with enhanced speed, suspension, safety and comfort, but added that commercial viability and occupancy cannot be ignored when planning medium‑term deployment.
Udaipur–Asarwa Vande Bharat to replace discontinued services
The rakes released from the Jaipur and Agra services are being reassigned to a new Udaipur City–Asarwa (Ahmedabad) Vande Bharat Express, approved recently by the Railway Board. North Western Railway stated that the fresh link between south Rajasthan and Gujarat aims to “further transform regional connectivity” and tap stronger inter‑state demand. The new train, maintained by NWR, will run six days a week, except Tuesdays.
Regular operations on the Udaipur–Asarwa corridor will see departure from Udaipur City at 6:10 am, reaching Asarwa around 10:25 am, with the return service leaving Asarwa at 5:45 pm and arriving in Udaipur close to 10:00 pm. En‑route halts include Zawar, Dungarpur, Shamlaji Road and Himmatnagar, indicating a design tailored to regional commuter flows rather than long‑haul tourists alone.
| Train | Old Route | Status from Feb 14–15 | Rake Redeployment |
|---|---|---|---|
| 20979/80 | Udaipur City–Jaipur | Discontinued from Feb 14 | Shifted to Udaipur–Asarwa Vande Bharat |
| 20981/82 | Udaipur City–Agra Cantt | Discontinued from Feb 15 | Shifted to Udaipur–Asarwa Vande Bharat |
Tourism, Golden Triangle operators flag concerns
Tour operators in Jaipur, Udaipur and Agra say the withdrawal comes just as the premium trains were gaining recall among higher‑end domestic tourists on the Golden Triangle extensions. Agencies selling Jaipur–Agra–Udaipur combos argue that at least one seasonal review after peak travel would have provided better data on potential. Some worry foreign tourists, familiar with flagship brands like Vande Bharat, may perceive reduced premium options in Rajasthan.
Operators also highlight that limited intermediate stoppages and higher fares restricted the catchment beyond core city pairs, constraining occupancy. They suggest that adding halts at key tourism hubs and tweaking pricing or dynamic discounts could have supported ridership before outright discontinuation. For now, many are reworking itineraries around Shatabdi, Intercity and overnight express trains that still connect Jaipur, Udaipur and Agra on a daily basis.
Alternative trains, refunds and options for passengers
For travellers booked after February 14–15, Indian Railways has stopped accepting reservations on the discontinued Vande Bharat trains beyond their last operating dates. Existing confirmed bookings on cancelled days are eligible for full refunds under standard cancellation rules applied to train‑initiated disruptions, which are processed automatically for online tickets and through counters for PRS tickets. Passengers are advised to check updated status on IRCTC and enquiry portals.
On the Jaipur–Udaipur and Agra–Rajasthan sectors, passengers can shift to services such as the Ajmer–Agra Fort Express, Udaipur–Delhi Sarai Rohilla Express, Jaipur–Udaipur Intercity and other superfast or express trains, many of which offer lower fares though with longer journey times. Railway officials maintain that route adjustments, including the new Udaipur–Asarwa Vande Bharat, are part of periodic reviews and may evolve further as demand patterns, tourism flows and feedback from passengers in Jaipur, Udaipur and Agra get reassessed.
