How is the PIN Code decided?

The term PIN Code stands for Postal Index Number (PIN). It is also popularly known as area postal code or ZIP code. This PIN Code is the post office numbering code system used by the postal service department in India. 

The system of PIN Code was first introduced in India way back in 1972 on August 15. The PIN Code is a six-digit long numeric code and each of the digits represents a particular meaning. 

First Digit 

The first digit represents the region in the PIN code, accordingly, there are 9 PIN regions in the country out of which 8 are assigned to geographical location and the last one is dedicated for the army postal service. 

Second Digit 

The second digit represents the sub-region in the PIN Code. So the first two digits of the PIN identifies the particular circle. 

Third Digit in PIN Code

The third digit in the PIN Code system will indicate the sorting district within the region. 

Last Three Digits in PIN Code

The last three digits in the PIN code system designated the specific post office located within the district.
