Capital goods stocks including Larsen, Thermax, Alstom, Punj Lloyd and Bharat Electricals gained.
Banking stocks also saw spectacular gains with ICICI Bank, IDBI Bank, Canara Bank and Bank of India rising sharply.
All the major auto names like Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki, Bajaj Auto and Mahindra & Mahindra gained 0.1-2.5%.
IndusInd Bank gained more than 7% after posting better than expected results.
Among sectoral indices, all the sectors were in green except healthcare, metal and IT stocks were in red.
Losers in the trade were NMDC, HCL Tech, TCS, Dr Reddy and Cipla.
The exchanges will be closed tomorrow on account of Ram Navami.
