Voting is a privilege of living in a democracy like India. We have the opportunity to choose and vote for our leaders. To use this facility, we need a Voter's ID and applying for it is easy with the Election Commission of India's online portal.
Waiting for the elections to apply for a new voter's ID could be too late. Voting is your right as an Indian citizen. Find out how you can apply for it online.
Types of applications for voters
- General new voter: If you are permanent resident of India and are applying for a voter's ID for the first time, you will fall under this category.
- Change in constituency: If you changed your permanent residence, you should select this option while filing Form 6A.
- Overseas: If you have been living outside India for employment or educational purposes you will be an overseas (NRI) voter.
- Photograph (in .jpg, .jpeg, .png or .bmp format)
- Age proof: Birth certificate or 10th/8th/5th standard marksheet or passport (Indian) or PAN card or Driving License or Aadhar.
- Address proof: Passport or Driving License or bank passbook, ration card, income tax assessment order or rental agreement or utility bill.

Go to the official website
Visit www.nvsp.in, the official portal of the Election Commission of India and click on the first option if you fall into the "General category" or the second option for "overseas voter."
Change your preferred language
By default, the Form 6A will appear in Hindi. You can choose English or Malayalam instead, from the drop-down option.
Choose between New Voter ID and change in constituency
After changing the language choose your State of residence and district, then the list of constituencies should appear in your page. Choose your current permanent residence's constituency and select between "As a first time voter" and "due to shifting from another constituency" based on your situation
Complete the form and submit
Fill the complete form and upload necessary documents and click on "Submit."
On submission, your form will appear on Electoral Registration Officer's (ERO) notice board. It will stay there as an invitation for objections (if any) from anyone for one week. If there are no objections raised, your name will be added to the electoral roll and you should get your Voter ID by post on the mentioned address.
If an objection is raised against you, you will receive an alert through post or SMS on the mobile number provided by you. The ERO or Assistant Electoral Registration Officer (AERO) will hear the objector's and your cases.
