We take the utmost effort to avoid errors while preparing our income tax return (ITR). But many of us wait until the last minute to submit our tax returns, which might result in unintended mistakes. Some examples of these mistakes include giving the incorrect bank account number, failing to report interest income, claiming the incorrect deduction, etc.

If you did make a mistake, don't panic; you can fix it thanks to the current income tax legislation. If you found the error after submitting your income tax return, you may be able to make the necessary corrections in accordance with the law. By submitting a revised income tax return, taxpayers may correct any errors in accordance with Section 139(5) of the Income-tax Act of 1961.
According to Section 139(5), a person may submit a revised return if they find an error or omission after submitting their tax return. This may be submitted three months before the conclusion of the pertinent assessment year or, if earlier, before the evaluation is complete. The financial year for which the return is filed is the financial year for which the assessment is made. Therefore, here is how to file an amended return if you made an error in your ITR.
What is a revised return?
You can correct any factual errors or omissions that were present in your first ITR by filing an amended return. Resubmitting your return with updated information is the same as filing an amended return. You must include information from the original return when filing an amended return.
Who can file a revised return?
Any assessee who has submitted an ITR is qualified to make revisions. It is possible to file a revised return even if your ITR was submitted after the deadline has passed. Traditionally, the only taxpayers who were permitted to alter their returns were those who had submitted an ITR before the deadline expired..
How to file revised ITR?
The procedure for submitting an amended ITR is the same as for submitting a first one. The option Updated u/s 139(5) must be chosen in the return filed under column. The ITR form will also ask you for information about the previous ITR, such as the receipt number and the original ITR's filing date.
How many times may an amended return be filed?
You may submit a revised return as many times as you like. Note that you must include information about your initial ITR with each updated return you file. You have the opportunity to fix your error by revising your tax return, but you should not abuse this option and make sure to file your initial tax return with the utmost care.
