OpenAI CEO Sam Altman highlights India's swift adoption of AI technologies and significant investments in its tech ecosystem, particularly in Codex. He anticipates India becoming the largest market for Codex globally, reflecting the country's vigorous approach to AI innovation.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently expressed strong confidence in India's tech sector, highlighting the country's significant investment in AI. He noted India's rapid adoption of AI tools like Codex, predicting it will soon become the largest market globally. Altman believes this momentum signals an impending surge in AI-driven entrepreneurship within the country.

Altman praised India's comprehensive approach to AI, investing across infrastructure, model, and application layers. He remarked on India's swift embrace of these technologies, making it the fastest-growing market for Codex, OpenAI's specialised AI system for programming. "Someone told me, I think it'll be the biggest Codex market in the world pretty quickly," he stated.
AI Infrastructure and Global Standards
When asked about expanding Stargate to India, Altman mentioned that it depends more on India than OpenAI but expressed eagerness for a swift development. Regarding India's substantial AI infrastructure investments, with USD 100 billion in the pipeline, Altman said OpenAI is open to partnering with India on a larger scale.
Altman discussed India's AI regulations and its dialogue with industry on age-gating. He anticipates different countries will adopt varied approaches to AI labelling and regulation. "I suspect we'll move more towards global standards," he said, acknowledging that uniformity may never be achieved worldwide.
Impact on Jobs and Education
Altman foresees AI significantly affecting current job roles. While some jobs will undergo partial changes, others might transform entirely or new roles may emerge. He emphasised the importance of skills like resilience and adaptability in this evolving landscape. "Everybody does need to learn to get good at using AI tools," he added.
Addressing concerns about AI's cognitive impact on students, Altman recalled initial fears when Google launched. Teachers worried about students relying too much on technology for information retrieval. However, society adapted by using brainpower differently while letting tools handle basic tasks.
Future of Learning with AI Tools
Altman stressed the importance of teaching students how to think critically despite having access to advanced tools like ChatGPT. He shared his experience of learning traditional skills like essay writing, which taught him valuable thinking processes still relevant today.
Looking ahead, Altman envisions a future where students will have access to AI tools but will need new methods for learning and evaluation. "Assume they have the tools, but still make them think and be creative," he advised. As tools improve, educational expectations must also rise.
