What is CNG?

CNG or Compressed Natural Gas is a natural gas used in vehicles. Being used for light, medium and heavy-duty applications, CNG-powered vehicles will give the same fuel economy as a conventional gasoline vehicle on a GGE basis.

Unlike diesel and gasoline fuel stations, the fuel stations of the compressed natural gas (CNG) are not one size fits all. The building of a CNG fuel station for a retail application or a fleet requires calculating the right combination of pressure and storage requirements for all types of vehicles being fueled. Hence making the right choice about the size of the compressor and the amount of storage at the station will highly impact the cost of the fuel and range for vehicles.

Types of CNG Stations

There are two types of CNG stations, namely – time-fill and fast-fill. The main structural differences between the two systems are the size of the compressor and the amount of storage capacity of CNG fuel. These factors will determine the amount of fuel dispensed and the time it takes for the CNG to be delivered. Many CNG stations will have either one of the two system types, but combination full stations will have both time fill and fast fill stations.
