LPG Price in Bihar (24th April 2024)

The Domestic LPG (14.2 kg) price in Bihar (Patna) stands at ₹892.50. No change recorded in the LPG price compared to last month. Over the past 12 months, the LPG price trend has been decreasing, with a decrease of ₹308.5 from May 2023 to April 2024. The most significant price decrease was ₹200 in August 2023.

The LPG price in Bihar is mainly determined by the state-run oil companies and the same is subject to change on a monthly basis based on the global crude fuel rates. The rise in crude oil leads to a rise in the LPG rates in Bihar and vice-versa. LPG is a safe and colourless gas and hence its use has tremendously increased in the domestic and industrial sector. The government of India is currently providing domestic LPG Gas cylinder (14.2 kgs) in Bihar at subsidized rates to the low-income section of the society. The subsidy amount will be directly transferred to the customer’s bank account. Currently, the cooking gas in India is easily accessible to most of the people.

How is LPG different from LNG?

The term LPG refers to liquified petroleum gas and LNG stands for liquified natural gas. Liquified natural gas majorly contains methane and small volumes of other gases mixed in it. LNG is a compressed liquefied version of gas. But LPG consists of a combination of propane and methane.

Pros of using LPG

  • It has high anti-knock characteristics.
  • It provides easy portability and convenience.
  • The fuel is clean when compared with other fuels like oil and coal.
  • It provides a uniform charge for combustions.
  • LPG as a gas mixes with air at all temperatures.
  • The LPG consists of less amount of carbon in it and hence it produces less carbon-di-oxide than petrol.
  • It has high compression ratios.
  • It is odourless.

Cons of using LPG

  • The ignition temperature of LPG is higher when compared to petrol.
  • For the usage of LPG, a special fuel feed system is required.
  • As LPG is stored in heavy cylinders, the cost of storage is relatively high.
  • LPG has to be stored safely and this will involve heavy costs.
  • LPG is a highly flammable gas.
  • The gas is pressurized at 274 times less space than it generally occupies and hence it requires extremely hefty metal tanks.

Uses of Liquified Petroleum Gas (LPG)

The LPG is gaining popularity in industries owing to a wide variety of its uses. They are:

  • LPG is free from Sulphur and hence it can be used in sensitive situations like chemical processing and so on.
  • It is one of the most cost-effective, environmentally-friendly forms of fuel.
  • Today, industries lookout for quality, cost efficiency, heat controllable form of fuel and LPG fits perfectly into the bill.
  • It is a pure, clean green source as it provides controllable and even heat, making it an ideal source for power and heat for a wide range of industrial uses.
  • LPG has also found its usage in space and process heating to power industrial kilns, ovens, machinery, furnaces, food processing units and so on.

Properties of Liquified Petroleum Gas

  • LPG is a colourless liquid.
  • It is an odourless gas and hence an odorant is used to detect leakage of LPG.
  • It is twice as heavy as air and half as heavy as water.
  • It is a safe form of fuel and ignites only within the specified air ratio of 2% - 9%.
  • It can be compressed at a ratio of 1:250, as this enables it to be marked in portable containers in liquid form.
  • LPG has a high calorific value of 11,900 Kcal/Kg resulting in high-efficiency heat output.

Who should a consumer contact in case of LPG cylinder leakage during nights/holidays?

If a consumer observes leakage of an LPG cylinder beyond working hours and on public or government holidays one can contact the Emergency Service Cell (ESC), operating in the respective areas. The phone numbers of the ESC will be mentioned on the refill cash memos.

LPG Production Process

LPG is made during a natural gas processing and oil refining process. It is separated from the unprocessed natural gas using the refrigeration technique and later extracted from heated crude oil using a distillation tower. The LPG which is obtained can be used as it or it can be separated into its three primary parts namely – propane, isobutane and butane.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas is usually stored pressurized in the form of liquid in cylinders or tanks.

Constituents of LPG

LPG constitutes a group of flammable hydrocarbon gases which are liquefied through pressurization and are commonly used as a fuel. The following list of gases is also labelled under LPG and it includes butane, isobutane, propane and a mixture of all these three.

The Liquefied Petroleum Gases can be stored in steel vessels ranging from small BBQ gas bottles to larger tanks and gas cylinders.

Main Uses of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG)

LPG can be used for numerous purposes, important amongst them include:

• In Homes, it is used for cooking, heating, BBQ

Why Does Global Factors Have No Implications On Bihar LPG Rates Today?

The structure of modern trade is highly complex as nations are interdependent on each other for raw materials, investments, finished goods, and much more. There are comparably multiple aspects having a directional push on international LPG demand, which have direct effect on the fuel prices at domestic levels. Sometimes crude oil exporting countries might face geopolitical issues or war situations, leading to an unstable condition for timely trade deliveries. The delay or supply disruption causes financial markets and commodity segments as well to crumble. The higher demand of crude oil at international market, tends to result in exponential spike in fuel rates in India due to multiple factors that are trade-related. Once the demand globally is increased with cost of physical crude oil rising, India LPG rates, along with other fuel would also follow the trend with appropriate hikes. However, the government of the country holds a tight grip over fuel prices in Bihar and other parts today, as the fuel prices have direct impact on LPG prices in Bihar and other states. LPG prices in Bihar today are determined by the state and central government, which maintains the price-supply ratio by wither increasing or decreasing tax collection from LPG rates in Bihar today. Hence a lower taxation, during election season, despite increasing crude oil prices at international level can ensure LPG gold rates in Bihar today to stay lower for benefiting the local population.
