RBI Withdraws Rs 2,000 Banknotes From Circulation, Continues To Be Legal Tender

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has made an important decision regarding the circulation of Rs 2,000 banknotes. The central bank has decided to withdraw these high-denomination notes from circulation, but they will continue to retain their status as legal tender until September 30, 2023.

RBI has requested that banks offer a deposit and/or exchange facility for notes worth Rs 2,000 and has also instructed banks to immediately stop issuing such banknotes.

People are being urged by the state bank to deposit the Rs. 2,000 banknotes into their accounts or to exchange them for banknotes of other denominations at any bank branch.

An exchange facility for bank notes up to 20,000 rupees will be open as of May 23, according to a statement from RBI.

The central bank considers that four months is sufficient time for consumers to exchange their money at banks. Within the allotted time limit of 30 September, it is anticipated that the majority of the Rs 2,000 notes in use will be returned to banks.

"Rs 2000 currency note will remain legal tender after 30th September too. RBI expects that 4 month time is enough for people to exchange notes with the banks. Most of the Rs 2000 notes that are in circulation will return to banks within the given time frame of 30th September. This is a routine exercise of RBI and people need not panic," ANI reported.

Meanwhile, the central bank has instructed banks to immediately stop issuing banknotes with a denomination of Rs 2000.
