Sensex Opens Higher As Global Markets Surge

Benchmark indices opened the day higher led by a surge in Asian markets after solid overnight closings in the United Stated and Europe.

The Sensex was trading with gains of 197 points, despite worries over the outcome of the Bihar elections. The Nifty was trading higher by 49 points at 8109 points.

The notable gainers from the Nifty was Tata Motors, which surged a huge 4 per cent in trade. Other stocks that gained were Tata Steel and Hindalco.

Shares in Sun Pharma was marginally higher after Taro put in a performance that matched expectations. Tech Mahindra, however, gained after its results, particularly the margin improvement saw buying in the stock.

Power Grid too saw a good rally after the company's quarterly results beat expectations. Mid cap stocks also saw buying support with the index up almost half a per cent. Leading the set of gainers from the space were GSPL and HDIL.

Power Grid saw its share gain after the company reported better than expected results. However, Gail fell after its results largely disappointed the street.

Meanwhile, markets across Asia were trading with solid gains led by by the Shanghai Composite, which surged almost 3 per cent and the Hang Sang, which was also trading with gains of more than 3 per cent.
