Google CEO Sundar Pichai has announced a new subsea cable project to enhance AI connectivity between India, the US, and other regions. This initiative is part of Google's broader strategy to support cloud infrastructure for over 20 million public servants across 800 districts in India. Pichai made these announcements during the AI Impact Summit 2026, highlighting India's potential in AI development.

Pichai emphasised that AI represents the most significant platform shift of our time. He believes it offers countries like India a chance to overcome longstanding challenges and create new opportunities. "AI is the biggest platform shift of our lifetime...for countries like India, AI presents a chance to leapfrog age-old gaps and create new opportunities," he stated.
AI Connectivity and Infrastructure
The recently announced $15-billion AI hub in Vizag, Andhra Pradesh, will feature a gigawatt-scale compute facility and an international subsea cable gateway. This development aims to bring jobs and advanced AI benefits to people and businesses across India. Google is behind foundational AI models like Gemini and Gemma, which enhance search, cloud services, and enterprise tools.
Google's India-America Connect Initiative will establish new subsea cable routes to improve AI connectivity between the US, India, and other Southern Hemisphere locations. This initiative is part of Google's efforts to bolster digital infrastructure in India. Pichai also highlighted Google's full-stack connectivity in India, expressing excitement about the future they are building together.
Skilling Initiatives and Partnerships
Google has launched major skilling programmes in India, including the Google AI Professional Certificate for students and early-career professionals. The company has partnered with Karma Yogi Bharat to empower 20 million public servants across 800 districts in 18 languages. Additionally, Google is collaborating with Atal Tinkering Labs to bring generative AI assistance to over 10,000 schools and 11 million students.
Pichai outlined Google's commitment to investing in skilling initiatives and partnerships to support India's adoption of AI technologies. These efforts aim to equip individuals with the skills needed for the evolving job market. "AI has the biggest impact on people's lives when it is developed and deployed with the institutions that know these communities best," Pichai noted.
AI's Role in Scientific Innovation
Google has launched a $30-million AI for Science Impact Challenge to support global researchers using AI for scientific breakthroughs. Pichai highlighted how AI is accelerating scientific discovery, from advancing quantum computing to predicting extreme weather events. He expressed excitement about AI's potential to solve complex problems in science.
Pichai described AI as one of the most powerful tools for solving problems and improving lives on a global scale. He noted its applications in making diseases more detectable, enhancing community resilience, and increasing accessibility to learning resources.
Meeting with Prime Minister Modi
Pichai met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his visit. They discussed Google's role in supporting India's mission to integrate AI at all levels. This includes improving healthcare, expanding access to information in multiple languages, supporting startups, and enhancing agriculture.
Modi shared images of their meeting on social media, expressing delight at discussing India's work in AI with Pichai. They explored how Google can collaborate with India's talented students and professionals in this field.
AI Adoption in India
India is among the countries with high adoption rates for voice and visual search technologies powered by AI. Indian users are among the top global adopters of these technologies. Pichai mentioned that an enhanced model will soon allow real-time search using voice and camera inputs in users' native languages.
The Gemini app, a personal AI assistant available in 10 languages in India, is rapidly gaining popularity worldwide. Pichai noted that India's market is one of the largest for this app.
Google has been investing in AI for over a decade as it sees this technology as crucial for advancing its mission. The company aims to reimagine everyday products through AI innovations. "Google AI Overviews - AI-generated summaries at the top of search results - is one of the most successful launches in search in the past decade," Pichai said.
