Sensex Hits New Record Closing High Led by Consumer Stocks

Indian equity markets gained in intraday high with leads from ITC, Maruti Suzuki, ICICI Bank and Hindustan Unilever. BSE S&P Sensex marked a fresh high closing of 36,718.60 points, as it rose by 222.23 points or 0.61 percent from the previous closing, while NSE's Nifty was up by 74.90 points (0.68 percent) to 11084.80. The four notable movement in stocks for the day were:

  • The Mumbai-based fertilizer maker UPL Ltd was up by as much as 15.5 percent on Monday (the highest gain in over four years) to Rs 635 on its agreement to acquire Arysta LifeScience and its subsidiaries for about $4.2 billion.
  • Shares of VST Industries, the Hyderabad-based cigarette maker to 20 percent (the highest in over 10 years) to Rs 2,993 on reporting its June earnings. Its Q1 net profit was up by 54 percent to Rs 61 crore.
  • Shares of Bajaj Finserv surged by 4.89 percent to a record high of Rs 6,990 on heavy volume trading that was 3.2 times its 20-day average, as per a Bloomberg report.
  • Stocks of Shalimar Paints were trading 7.8 percent higher to Rs 125.50 as a result of the 10 point cut in GST rate on paints and varnishes to 18 percent.
