In 1950 when India's constitution came into effect this date was chosen as it was the anniversary of Purna Swaraj Day, which was held on January 26, 1930.     It was believed Hiranyakashipu a hard hearted and evil King decided to kill his own son as he refused to worship him. He asked his sister 'Holika', who was immune to fire, to sit on a pyre of fire with Prahalad in her lap. Actually they plan to burn Prahalad. But their plan did not go through as Prahalad who was reciting the name of Lord Vishnu throughout was safe, but Holika got burnt to ashes. The defeat of Holika signifies the burning of all that is bad. After this, Lord Vishnu killed Hiranyakashipu. It is actually the death of Holika that is associated with Holi.

    Bank holidays in Goa

    There are a number of popular bank holidays in Goa and these include Christmas. In fact, Christmas is the most widely celebrated festival in the state and is also popular abroad. Apart from thhis there is Good Friday, which is a more a solemn celebration and marks the victory of Jesus Christ over Satan on the cross. This is also time of reflections for most people in God on Jesus's supreme sacrifice on the cross for all mankind.     About Goa

    The state was a Portuguese colony and was discovered by Vasco De Gama. In terms of GDP per capita, the state is the richest in the country. The contribution of tourism to the state government coffers has also helped in the rapid development of the state of Goa. The capital of Goa is Panaji.

    The state is also very rich in minerals, with significant amounts of iron ore being mined. Goa is known for cashew plantations and also mangoes. Apart from that, it is also known for quality bauxite deposits and manganese deposits. A lot of large industries including pharma, steel rolling and footwear are found. The climate of the state can be quite humid at times and hence the best time to visit would be the winter months from Nov to Feb.
