Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti: It is a national holiday. On this day, Mahatma Gandhi who is considered the father of the nation was born to a Hindu merchant family in Porbandar, Gujarat. He was an Indian activist who lead the Indian Independence Movement against British rule in India. He employed the tool of non-violence to lead the independence movement which inspired many across the world.

Maharishi Valmiki’s Birthday: Maharishi Valmiki was an ancient saint who composed Ramayana, one of the greatest epics of Hinduism. He is considered Adi Kavi (means the first poet). The story of Ramayana depicts the story of Prince Rama of the Kingdom of Kosala and whose wife Sita was abducted by the demon Ravana, King of Lanka. Shobha yatras will be conducted on this day to mark the occasion.

Diwali: It is a Hindu festival. The festival is popularly known as the Festival of Lights. People start cleaning the house and decorating the house days in advance before the commencement of the festival. The day marks the homecoming of Lord Rama after spending 14 years of life in exile away from his kingdom in Ayodhya.

On this day, to mark the occasion people wake up early in the morning, draw rangoli outside the house to welcome Goddess Lakshmi – the goddess of wealth, prepare festival delicacies, exchange gifts, wear new clothes, decorate their homes with diyas, perform special puja in shops, gift sweets for friends and family members. On this day people perform Lakshmi Ganesh Puja after dusk and then light diyas outside their homes as a mark of tradition.
