Google Pay is an online payments system and a digital wallet developed by Google to power in-app and make purchases using a mobile device. The app helps the users to make payments with tablets or watches or with Android-based phones.
Previously launched as Android Pay, the service was released at Google I/O in 2015. Android Pay was a successor to and was built on the base established by Google Wallet which was released in the year 2011. It used the technology from Softcard whose intellectual property was acquired by Google in February 2015. At the time of its launch, the service was compatible with 70% of Android devices and was accepted at around 700,000 merchants.
Beginning from January 8, 2018, the Android Pay and Google Wallet have been unified into a single payment system under Google’s new Unified Payments Services. Tez was a mobile service payment launched by Google in India, but later it was renamed as the Google Pay app from August 28, 2018. Google Pay has adopted the features of both Android Pay and Google Wallet using its in-store, peer to peer and online payments services.
The rebranded service provides a new API which allows the merchants to add payment services to websites, apps, Braintree, Google Assistant. The unique feature of this service is it allows its users to make use of the payment cards they have on file using Google Play.
Starting from May 2018, the Google App has added support for event tickets and boarding passes.
The Google Pay App uses the Near Field Communication (NFC) to transmit the card information which facilities funds transfer to the retailers. It has replaced the use of debit or credit card and PIN or magnetic stripe transaction at the Point of Sale (POS) terminals, as it allows its users to upload their Google Pay wallet.
The app is similar to the contactless payments which are already existing in many countries worldwide. The app works on two-factor authentication. The service allows Android-based devices to wirelessly communicate with the Point of Sale (POS) systems using an NFC antenna, Android’s security and host-based card emulation.
Most of the times the Google Pay takes advantage of the Physical authentications including that of a fingerprint ID if it is available. On those devices, which do not have fingerprint ID, the Google Pay app is activated using a passcode. Whenever the user makes a payment at a store, the app does not send the debit or credit card number with the payment. Instead, it will generate a virtual account number which represents the user’s account information and this kind of service keeps the customer payments information secure, private.
The system is designed in such a way that it sends one-time security code instead of the card or any other relevant details of the user. The Google Pay app requires the users to set a screen lock on their respective phone and it usually does not have a card limit.
All the users have to do is to add payment cards to the Google Pay services either by taking a photo of the card or by entering the card information manually.
At the Point Of Sale (POS), the users will have to hold their authentic devices to the POS system, the system which has a smart authentication will allow the system to detect when the device is considered secure (example: if the device is unlocked in the last five minutes) and challenge if necessary for unlocking the information.

About Payments Profile
A payment profile is mainly generated automatically for the first time when you purchase anything from Google (such as storage space via Google One or as digital content on Play). Google Payments Profile contains information like:
Instead of paying directly from a linked bank account you can add credit or debit cards as a payment method. Credit or Debit cards added to Google Pay will not substitute linked bank accounts, they are only legitimate forms of payment to merchants.
For making the card payment as your default payment method, you need to link a bank account to send or receive money with others.
How do card payments work?
Google Pay generates a virtual account number known as a 'token' that substitutes the actual number of your card anytime you use a credit or debit card as a payment form. This method, called tokenisation, holds secrecy of your personal and financial records. Tokenisation ensures that when you make transactions, even transactions in other applications, your private information is not accessed with anyone at all.
Once your token has been generated and your card has been registered as a form of payment, you can make payments to merchants using your card. You are granted the way to achieve prizes and other rewards for each transaction you render with a card.
Where you can pay through card payments?
For the mentioned types of transactions, you can use a credit or debit card added to Google Pay:
