How Does a Credit Card Work?

A credit card also known as plastic money will allow the user to spend money using the card. Having a credit card is like having a loan or debt for the money spent up to the set credit limit.

On paying the credit card bill fully, the cardholder will not be levied any interest on the borrowed credit amount. The cash withdrawal made by the cardholder will be charged with daily interest beginning from the date of cash withdrawal.

The credit card issuers charge higher interest rates and if the dues are not paid on time, then the borrower will end up repaying higher interest charges. The interest rate on cash withdrawal is higher when compared to purchases.

What is a good credit score?

Most of us like to score high on our exams because it is proof that we can show others our performance or it is a matter of pride for some. Your scores have an impact on your career as they are the representation of your knowledge and they can help you gain recognition in various aspects. A good credit score is important for everyone because it is a major proof to the lender that you are responsible for your credit. People with good credit are the delight of lenders when they want to extend credit. You must know about credit score what exactly a good credit score is and how the credit score is calculated.

Let's take a look at a good credit score and its benefits in detail.

A credit score is a three-digit numeric expression that ranges between 300 and 900, which represents your creditworthiness. Good credit is a winner in every loan or credit application. The credit score 750 and above is considered a good credit score. Your credit score is generated by the credit bureaus, namely Equifax, CIBILTM, ExperianTM and CRIF High MarkTM. The credit score of each credit bureau may vary because they have a different mechanism for calculating the credit score. However, there will be no far variations.

Good credit score range

A credit score between 750 and 900 is considered an excellent credit score. Banks, NBFCs, and other online lenders prefer applicants with such a high credit score. If you have such a credit rating, you can rest assured that you will qualify for any credit product. The following will help you understand the range of credit points and what they mean.

Credit Score range and its benefits:

If your credit score is 750 - 900 Excellent eligible for low-interest rates and higher chances of approval
If your credit score is 700 - 749 Good May become eligible for better interest rates.
If your credit score is 650 - 699 fair options are limited, but credit approval is possible.
If your credit score is 600-649, interest rates on loans and credit card approval could be more difficult
If your credit score is below 600, required chances of approval are very low.

As the table illustrates, it is very clear that a credit score of 750 and above is considered a good credit score that can help you take advantage of several credit options.

Benefits of a good credit score:

Having a conservative approach to all of your repayments can get you a good credit rating which in turn will bring many benefits.

Here are some of the main benefits that a financially healthy person can enjoy throughout their life:

1. Low-interest rates on all types of loans:

This is a major advantage when it comes to having a good credit rating. Everyone aims to maintain good credit only for the reason that the loan can be used at low-interest rates.

Getting a low-interest loan can help you pay off the loan much faster.

It reduces a significant financial burden and helps you live a happy life. Even a slight reduction in inexpensive loans such as home equity loan, home loan and any other loans can save you a lot of money based on Interest rates in the long run.

2. Higher Approval Chances for Loans and Credit Cards:

Each lender pulls out your credit report and checks your credit score when you apply for a loan or a credit card.

This is called a difficult investigation which will have a slight impact on your credit score. The impact can be even more negative when the request is rejected.

But with a good credit rating, the chances of credit approval are higher because the lender will have no reason to reject your application.

Guaranteed higher chances of approval with better terms on the credit product.

Borrowers with bad credit may refrain from applying for a new loan or new credit card until their credit health is restored.

3. Get higher limits

Your income and your good credit rating are the two main determinants of your loan or credit card approval. Plus, they may get you a higher loan amount or a higher credit limit on the cards.
The lender assumes that you are a worthy and responsible borrower. With a low credit score, you can be approved for a loan or a card, but the rates can be higher and the amount can be lower.
Therefore, having a good credit rating helps you borrow more at a better rate of interest.

4. More bargaining power

When someone with bad credit applies for the loan, the application can be approved, but the interest rates can be sharply higher. The repayment could even become tedious.
The applicant will have no power to negotiate with the lender to reduce the interest rate. On the contrary, people with a good credit score will have higher chances of approval on loan and card applications.
Also, the borrower has the power to negotiate with the lender to charge a much lower interest rate by comparing the offers of other lenders. It can save you a lot of money and help you get a faster refund.

What is Credit Card Fraud?

A Credit Card Fraud refers to the fraudulent usage of credit card which is done through the theft of the credit cardholder’s details. The advancement of technology and the growing number of e-commerce sites has encouraged the scammers to easily pinch in the details of the card users.

Gone are the days, wherein the misuse of the credit card was solely done after the theft of the physical credit card. These days, fraudsters need not require your physical card at all, they will use all kinds of tricks to swap data from your credit card without the holder's knowledge and can easily conduct a scam without your knowledge.

Types of Credit Card Fraud

The following are the different types of credit card frauds

  • Counterfeit and Skimming Fraud
  • Card Never Arrived Fraud
  • Card Not Present Fraud
  • False Application Fraud
  • Lost and Stolen Card Fraud

1. Counterfeit and Skimming Fraud

This is one of the most common forms of credit card fraud done using a skimming device. Skimming occurs when a device steals the details of your credit card from the magnetic stripe which commonly happens when a device known as credit card skimmer is attached either at a merchant’s terminal or at an ATM. This process can also be done when someone brushes past an individual with a credit card skimmer. All the details which will be obtained through the skimming can be used to create a counterfeit card which in turn will be used to conduct fraudulent transactions.

2. Card Never Arrived Fraud

This kind of fraud happens when the customer does not receive the cards which they had ordered for. Whenever any interested customer applies for a credit card, the same will be sent to you to your postal address and an intimation related to the same will be sent to your email id. But the Card Never Arrived Fraud occurs when the card in question is either intercepted before it reaches the original applicant’s hand or if the thief of your card pinches it off from the letterbox.

3. Card Never Present Fraud

This kind of fraud occurs without the actual use of the physical card and mostly via online or over the phone. Nowadays, the card never present fraud is becoming more popular as customers are turning away from using their physical cards and they simply enter their details to purchase at a store.

Never reveal the details of your credit card to anyone be it online or via phone. Do not allow anyone to read the back of your card in general as thieves will have full-fledged details online and once they have your card details, they will be easily able to spend your money till their heart’s content is fulfilled.

4. False Application Fraud

In this case, fraud occurs when the account was established using someone else’s identity or some kind of information. Application fraud can be a bunch of different things. It may either be that someone applies for a credit card in your name and will run away with a bunch of debt and this will impact your credit rating strongly. In other cases, someone may apply for a credit card in a different name but the card will be linked with your respective bank account to the card and you will be tied up with the repayments.

5. Lost and Stolen Card Fraud

In this case, the cards will either be lost or stolen and fraudulent activities will be conducted using the card. If at all you lose your credit card, immediately bring it to the notice of the credit card issuer as this will save you and your credit card score apart from saving you from the worst of the damage. All you have to do is to freeze or cancel the card by dialling up the customer care executive. Some of the credit card providers will even help you to do this at the very click of a button in their mobile banking apps.

  • Income: You must have a regular source of income, whether you are employed or self-employed.
  • Bank account: You must have a savings account in your name
  • Creditworthiness: You must have a good credit history. No defaults on loans or credit repayments. Your creditworthiness is often checked through your CIBIL credit score - so make sure you have a good credit rating.

These are the common points for credit card eligibility criteria for basic cards. Premium or co-branded cards may have different criteria including higher income requirements, better credit rating, and a long-standing relationship with the bank.

How can I improve the eligibility of my credit card?

One of the best ways to improve your eligibility for a credit card is to improve your credit score. Here are some tips listed below to maintain a good credit score.

  • Pay off your debts (loans, etc.) on time. Late payments poorly reflect your credit score. If you've defaulted on a loan, be sure to pay it off and clean your file.
  • Check and correct any inaccuracies in the credit report: Sometimes a loan that you have paid can show up as overdue on your credit report, which puts your score down.
  • Check your credit report carefully and correct any inaccuracies immediately.
  • One of the easiest ways to get an SBI Bank credit card is to apply through your existing bank. If you are starting your career or profession, start with a regular credit card, use it with caution, and work your way up to more premium cards.

This way, you will have a better credit history and better credit rating and can get loans and credit more easily in the future.

SBI Credit Card Interest Rate

If you use an SBI credit card and pay the entire outstanding amount within a specified time period, SBI does not charge any interest. However, if you make partial payments to the credit card balance and carry a certain amount to the next billing period, SBI can apply an interest rate on a regular basis on the closing balance before the balance is fully paid. The interest rate for SBI credit cards is the premium charged by SBI on the revolving balance lent by you using the card if the entire sum due is not paid on or before the due date. The interest rate charged by SBI can usually be as high as 3.35 percent a month or 40.2 percent annum. The interest rate, however, varies from card to card so it's best to check your credit card statements or contact SBI for more details.

SBI Credit Card Interest-Free Period

An interest-free time, also regarded as a grace period, is a period provided by SBI to its credit cardholder. The interest rate will not be charged until the cardholder paid the remaining balance during this time period. As stated earlier, depending on the type of credit card you carry, the grace period or interest-free period provided by SBI will range from 20 to 50 days.
